Stratos 24

Stratos 24 brings true innovation and quality to the ventilated pack world.

Inspired by Osprey's AntiGravity™ technology, Stratos 24 provides a fully adjustable AirSpeed™ ventilated back system which combines the single piece construction of the backpanel and hipbelt with highly breathable suspended mesh. This allows for increased comfort in warm weather, even with a heavy load.

The classic styling and clean design, alongside an impressively comfortable carry makes the Stratos 24 a firm favourite for walkers and hikers who are looking for a ventilated daypack with enough capacity for spare clothing, food, water and equipment. The detachable raincover stored in the bottom pocket increases weather resistance and tough nylon fabrics ensure durability. Stratos 24 features a large panel opening, an easy access pocket on the top and a large, vertically zipped expansion pocket on the front which is perfect for securely storing a jacket or spare layer for easy access. Stratos 24 is the perfect pack for warm days on winding trails.

Stratos 24 is compatible with all Hydraulics™ and Hydraulics LT™ reservoirs.

Slight improvement over predecessor but not a worth while upgrade
I have been using the predecessor of this updated 2017 Stratos 24 for a few years and decided to get this new 2017 model when it was launched earlier this year. I wanted a pack with a well ventilated back system so the Stratos range seems to tick the major boxes for me. However, here is what I'd found after using it for the last few months:

1. This new '17 version has the additional adjustable torso length panel (TLP) that sits at the top of the trampoline mesh (TM) and the back of the pack. It is attached to the TM by hook and loop (velcro) to allow the desired length to be achieved. The additional of this TLP means the thickness of the top section of the TM (approx 1/3 of the area) is significantly increased, reducing the ease of air flow. On hikes, my back significant got much hotter quicker than the pre '17 model and the heat and sweat were unable to escape easily, resulting in a much sweatier back.

2. The center of the TM at the top has a sew in tab of an "arrow" pointing up. This tab has sharp edges from either the tab itself or the stitch thread used to stitch the tab in place. This tab caused pilling to my hiking polyester tops.

3. The inside of the plastic waist buckle has the manufacturer's stamp on it. This stamp protrudes out and when done up, on hikes pressed against my hiking top, it rubbed and caused abrasion damage.

4. The material of this '17 version does not resist abrasion that well compared to the pre '17 version. I noticed significantly more abrasion marks picked up on the outer fabric from hikes through tress/shrubs and rocks.

5. Aesthetically, this '17 version looks nice and the additional vertical zip down the center front is a welcome addition to allow quick access to map etc...

Instead of making 2 sizes (s/m and m/l) like the predecessor, it is now only available in a single size; the TLP giving the user to achieve the desired fit as a compensation. This is cheaper for Osprey to make and less of a logistic nightmare but the user experience suffers overall.

Overall, after using this new version for a few months, I was left disappointed due to points 1 to 4. It wasn't worth the upgrade and I've since got rid of it, hence the 2 star awarded.
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi VK,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review for the Stratos 24.

We are sorry to hear that your new pack did not meet your initial expectations.

The adjustable torso length on the new Stratos ensures consumers can get a better, more tailored fit compared to the option of two unadjustable sizes for the previous Stratos. Tests that were carried out for the ventilation on the new pack with the adjustable torso length, still proved to be as ventilated as the old Stratos. However, we understand that the ventilation of all our packs will be subjective to the user and their activities.

Your points raised regarding the sewn-in tab and the stamp on the waist buckle, are not currently known issues. We would recommend contacting our Guarantee Team who would be happy to look into these points further for you. Please click here to contact them.

The material used for the current and previous Stratos is identical 210D HT Nylon and 420D HT Nylon reinforcement. The only slight difference is the weave pattern on the new Stratos to give it a slightly different aesthetic. Both packs should, due to their materials, have the same resistance to abrasion marks. Again, if you have found the material of your new Stratos not to reflect this standard, please contact our Guarantee Team for assistance.

All points you have raised are appreciated and we will pass this onto our Design Team for consideration.

Airspeed deffinelty not a fad.
Wanted a smallish pack for a day on the hills and maybe the occasional TAB.

Fit: Filled it to the brim with 16kg of rice for a test run (more yomping with shuffles) and no complaints so handles weight well. M\L is a tad tall for me at 5’10 but I’m ok with it. Sternum strap makes the shoulder straps fit nicely without being constrictive.

AirSpeed System: I love storming up the hills generating lots of heat but when wearing my previous TNF pack or 5.11 military one it always seems to leave me wet. Mesh trampoline type structure lets my top layer breathe to its full potential and has made a vast difference to me. People spend a lot on technical shells so why waste money by trapping it.

Features: 24L is the perfect capacity for what I wanted and choice of materials mean it’s nice and light. Glove friendly zip pulls are handy in a storm, really handy; love they are used on every pocket unlike other bags out there that mix and match. Most straps tidy up well however do wish they included elastic loops to tidy loose ends. Pack cover (in fashion at the moment) is not something I tend to use, but credit where it's due nice addition and deploys well.

Final Thoughts: Love this pack and would choose AirSpeed design again should I need another size. Only looses a star as I'm a neatness freak and wanted to tidy up straps more.

Built to last and fantastic customer service
I purchased an earlier revision of this pack that developed a fault on the top pocket zipper (a combination of general wear and tear and mishandling on my part).

I thought the pack was beyond repair but after contacting Osprey service via the webform and exchanging some digital photos via email I sent the pack back for repair the quoted modest cost. More remarkably on inspecting the pack the service centre technicians were able to repair the zipper at no charge.

I'm very pleased to be reunited with my pack which has always been light and very comfortable (I am 186cm tall and tall pack).

Such customer service is very rare in our throwaway world.

Stratos
Have been using this pack for 3 months. My first impression of the pack was very positive, it has all the features that I wanted in a technical day such as axe loop, hydration port, hiking pole loops etc. After 2 months of intermittent use, I discovered a tear in the bottom fabric between the rain cover and the main compartment which was surprise as I didn't place any sharp objects such as shovel but only headlamps, notebooks camera and such. I really hope the next design of this pack can replace that fabric with a more rugged piece. Love this pack despite its minor flaws!

Really comfortable
This is the most comfortable under 30 liters backpack that I ever had. I love the suspension system. The suspenders are really really wide and well padded so the bag is really comfortable even without the hipbelt. The mesh backpanel is also absolutly fantastic. It mold your back to every mouvements you do.
The only little problem is that the weight pull you back a little bit. But it's manageable on that small volume.
