Porter 46

Safe Travels. With padded sidewalls, convenient organization and a substantial suspension for backpack-style carry that hides away at airline check-in, the Porter Series has set the standard for deluxe duffels. Porter features a dedicated zippered laptop and tablet pocket, functional storage options for items both big and small and a large front panel access for easy packing.

StraightJacket™ compression straps with padded sidewalls to help protect your bag's contents and allow you to fit more gear or compress the bag to a smaller size when it isn't fully stuffed.

The Porter 46 harness and hipbelt deploy at a moment's notice for backpack style carry and quickly disappear into the backpanel for safe keeping when your bags are checked.

Structural sidewalls hold your bag open, making it easy to pack and unload, especially with the large U-zip opening. Dedicated, easily accessible pockets provide on-the-go access to key items. Travelling is about experience and memories, and you'll have more time for both when you spend less time packing.

When a duffel isn’t enough and backpacking bags are too much, the Porter 46 is the answer.

Great travelling Backpack
I travel a lot both for work and pleasure. I recently travelled around Guatemala for 10 days and this bag was perfect. It held everything i needed for the time and could have fit more things in. Very clever and efficient use of space and different pockets/areas are quickly accessible. Also fits easily into overhead baggage in planes. Fantastic product allround and I can see myself using this for any trip up to a couple of weeks. Only addition i'd like to see would be a pocket/space for holding a water bottle but apart from that - BRILLIANT!!

Best backback in the universe for a frequent traveller
I have traveled over 40 countries with this backpack and can easily say that it is the best thing ever made for a traveler. Very comfortable to use, walk and travel with (used it as carry-on on several airlines, including cheap ones: Ryanair, Wizzair or AirAsia, never had any issues). It is not a hiking bag but still - for most trips it will serve its purpose. After 3 years of heavy use (1.5 years traveled non-stop) the only thing that shows its not a brand-new products are a few hard to wash sunscreen dots - rest is in amazing shape.

A great product for travelling without paying extra luggage!
Amazing product, I loved it from first sight. It has so many practical things. The only thing that can be improved is the position of the laptop as it's at the back and this can give extra weight and harm the laptop.

Great Overnight weekender bag!
Packs well when you combine with the travel cubes. Laptop, cable, books the lot! Got a lot in and wasn’t too bulky when carrying. Will be using as a carry on to flights too, adding to its versatility. Can’t rate this bag highly enough. Get what you pay for!

Maybe the best packpack ever
The backpack is exactly what I needed. It is a large enough pack to fit in cloths and gear for a few days and still has an easy way to reach a the notebook compartment. Also the various pockets make traveling an organized experience. Not sure if I would use the pack for hiking trips though.

Porter 46 - my new favorite colleague
I have a Osprey Nebula 34 which i use for my work. As Project engineer building management sytems i travel arround the Netherlands and Belgium and have to carry a huge laptop with supplies around in construction sites and existing buildings (office, residential, industrial, datacenters, ...)
The Nebula fitst my 17"wide laptop perfectly, also all the suply's, notepad etc. But.. sometimes i need to take some more and that never fits.

The porter 46 fits my 17" laptop (even a little bigger i think) all the stuf i'm carrying around.
What fits in it:
- 17"wide laptop (mobile workstation)
- the huge power supply of this laptop
- 2x ultralight stretch sack 3l (with cables and electronics for the job)
- 1x ultralight stretch sack 1l (with a small networkswitch and wifi router)
- hardcover A5 notebook
- A4 scratchpad
- pencil case
- small pack screwrivers
- Waterbottle
- lunchpack
- documents

It is a litlle big for everyday use, but really comfortable.

And: Ordered on Wednesday, delivered on Thursday in the Netherlands. GREAT!

And i think i can add my little girl in the bag also.

Awesome travel backpack
I have used many osprey products but this one is just the next level. It is easier to carry and pack compared to a Farpoint/Fairview 40, it fits nicely in the european lowcost carry-on baggage allowance ( check with your carrier as with some of them you need to pay a small fee for a anything bigger than 20L) .
I have fitted in it :
- 1 x 15'6'' laptop
- 1 x 13'' laptop
- 1 x a 10l packing cube of electronics
- 1 x 20l packing cube of clothes
- Documents
- toiletry bag
And a few misc items. It is just the bag you need for a weekend long trip or even longer.
Take this with a pinch of salt as I don't carry fancy but practical clothes with me. This bag was packed for winter travel in europe so if you plan to travel to SE Asia, it will be able to take even more.

So close...
I was greatly disappointed to discover I had misunderstood from the photos where the laptop sleeve is. The laptop sleeve is against your back, not on the outside flap. Yes, against the back is better for weight distribution, you're much more likely to damage a laptop when the laptop is sandwiched between your back and a full pack of gear. Larger or more flexible laptops will bend under the pressure. At best, you just end up with key marks on your screen around the middle of the screen. At worst, you end up with a broken screen. If I had understood where the laptop sleeve was, I would not have bought this bag. :(
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi MT,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on the Porter 46.

We're sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the placement of the laptop sleeve. We want all of our customers to be 100% happy with their purchase, therefore if your Porter is still unused with all the labels intact, you can return this to us within 30 days of receiving it. You can find our full return Terms and Conditions here

We would instead recommend taking a look at our Farpoint 40 here. The Farpoint 40’s laptop/tablet sleeve is located in the front of the pack and Farpoint still has a lot of the same great travel features as the Porter 46, such as being front loading and carry-on friendly for most EU airlines.

Perfect backpack fitting most airlines cabin dimensions
I bought this backpack, because I needed something that would fit cabin dimensions for most airlines, and it does.
If you pack your backpack properly (hard things at the bottom and middle, and soft things in the end), this backpack can be very efficiently compressed and will more than fit the cabin dimensions.

It's also quite comfortable to carry, so it's pretty easy to walk with it for a while.

Say Hi Market
Really good backpack for weekenders
Really good quality and lightweight backpack. Its 46 litter capacity make it one of the bests choices out there for a 2-5 days trip.

It is very hard to find a fully openable backpack with a laptop compartment. Trust me, I have been looking for something like this for a year and a finally found it!

The only downside of the backpack (and Osprey in general) is the design. In terms of use the are one of the bests, but when it comes to aesthetics I can't say the same: To many Osprey logos everywhere. This simple fact makes their products to look cheap and low quality (and they are not).

**NOTE: I was so pleased with Osprey service and quality that I bought another backpack for commute.

Best backpack ever
This is the best backpack, I have ever used. Being an engineer, I appreciate great technology behind any product & Osprey definitely beats the other company with their innovation behind this master piece.
It was a great time fooling many airlines with their weight & size restriction of cabin luggage with the Porter 46.
I only wished if there was a service centre in India, in case something goes wrong with the product.

Great backpack!
I already knew that Osprey makes great backpacks, so I decided to get this one not only because it's a Osprey, but also because of its features.
I was just a bit afraid that I would not be able to carry it as a carry-on luggage, but I never had any problems with it. Always carry it as a cabin bag.
I bought it for a world trip, and haven't had any issues so far. Actually, I couldn't be happier with a backpack. It fits a lot of stuff! Totally recommend it!

Great bag for ultralight travel
I compared many different backpacks before I bought this one. What made me get this one in the end were the following factors:
1. Weight - just over 1 kilo is great if you want to travel carry-on only and need to be economical not just about what you take but also what you carry it in.
2. Stowable harness - important if bag is to heavy after all and needs to be checked in at the airport.
3. Lockable zippers - I can lock all zippers with just one small padlock.
4. Hip belt - many other carry-on backpacks do not have one at all.
5. Laptop/tablet sleeve and front organisational panel - I like the idea of being organized.
6. Top pocket for easy access to toiletries bag.
7. Fairly solid side walls - the backpack does not collapse in on itself when packing.
8. Compresses really well.

I have used this backpack as my sole bag on several trips now (three weeks in Southeast Asia, two weeks in Italy, several other short trips in Europe) and I'm still really happy with it. There is only one thing I would change about it: the hipbelt. It's too small and doesn't really help distribute weight from the shoulders to the hips. If the Porter 46 had the hipbelt of the Farpoint 40 it would be perfect. I thought about getting the Farpoint 40 instead because of the hipbelt issue but overall I like the design of the Porter 46 so much better that I will stick with it for now. Though if Osprey ever updates it with an improved hipbelt I will buy one immediately.

It fits airline carry on restrictions...
... if you don't book the cheapest of the cheapest more restricted luggage guidelines like Easyjet or Ryanair and don't make the thing look like a it's way too big on first sight. All other airlines are perfectly fine with it, even AA and United. Had no problems with it on Lufthansa and BA/DBA recently.

(4 stars because it could be a bit more comfortable and that size of bag with wheels would be amazing.)

Excellent all-rounder
Just took this for three weeks travel in Asia and it fitted the bill perfectly. The side-guards make it sturdy enough to stand up to the rigours of manhandling for buses and in airports, and the straps, which are easy to tuck away out of sight, are also comfortable enough to make it a comfortable backpack. And you don't have to fill it, as the straps tie it down to a good compact shape. Would definitely recommend to anyone off for a few weeks of travel. Great colour too (Nitro Green) - makes it easily recognisable.

Great!
Well-thought, great size for a sole-bag-flight, comfortable to carry! It may not fit all airlines' cabin restrictions, but certainliy most (or if they don't look too closely). I like the stability of the bag which makes clothes stay mostly in place and therefore good for business trips as well.
I have one suggestion for improvement: An expandable pocket at the bottom. Often, we travel from Germany to warm countries with hand-luggage only and wear sports shoes and a jacket on the flight. Once there (wearing flip-flops and a t-shirt), I'd like to stow them in the backpack, but there is no room. The expandable pocket would put things right.

Different weight
Just received mine! Feels like Christmas! :D
Bought this 3rd bag to ensure myself (again) with quality, and just by looking at it, I know it will not let me down.
But I also shop in ounces/grams... and when I saw "Weight : 1.09 kg" in the description, I was stoked! Now, when I see 1,387 kg on my scale, I'm shocked.
That's 27% off... !
I've even looked for objects in every pocket, 5 times over.
So, I'm not so happy anymore. And I will contact Osprey for this. But I'm still convinced it will prove it's value on the next trip.

Really Ideal for Travelling
I used this backpack for a month trip to Peru and was not disappointed. I kept being surprised with how the sides keep stretching and everything kept fitting without any problems! Every time, the zips would just close like it's empty! Zips open all the way round so easy to access stuff. Had no problems using it as carry on luggage on British Airways either. Liked the front compartment where you can put all your biros and papers and other small bits and pieces. Great colour and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a travel bag. The only problem I had was when I went to use the back straps in the airport and realised they're not connected. Though it's pretty obvious how to connect them, I would include a small paper with quick instructions on how to do this :)

Pretty much perfect
I bought this bag for a month long backpacking trip in Indonesia and I absolutely loved it.
It comfortably held all of my stuff and there was even a little space for most of the clothes and gifts that I picked up along the way.
Being able to tuck the straps away is such a comfort, when having to check your bag at the airport.
My only little moan and what would make this bag a 5 star in my opinion is that the hip and shoulder straps do not provide enough support and padding. It's fine if you're only walking short distances, but if the backpack is full, it gets quite uncomfortable about 25 mins or so.
