I bought this bag for a month long backpacking trip in Indonesia and I absolutely loved it.
It comfortably held all of my stuff and there was even a little space for most of the clothes and gifts that I picked up along the way.
Being able to tuck the straps away is such a comfort, when having to check your bag at the airport.
My only little moan and what would make this bag a 5 star in my opinion is that the hip and shoulder straps do not provide enough support and padding. It's fine if you're only walking short distances, but if the backpack is full, it gets quite uncomfortable about 25 mins or so.

I used this backpack for a month trip to Peru and was not disappointed. I kept being surprised with how the sides keep stretching and everything kept fitting without any problems! Every time, the zips would just close like it's empty! Zips open all the way round so easy to access stuff. Had no problems using it as carry on luggage on British Airways either. Liked the front compartment where you can put all your biros and papers and other small bits and pieces. Great colour and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a travel bag. The only problem I had was when I went to use the back straps in the airport and realised they're not connected. Though it's pretty obvious how to connect them, I would include a small paper with quick instructions on how to do this :)

Just received mine! Feels like Christmas! :D
Bought this 3rd bag to ensure myself (again) with quality, and just by looking at it, I know it will not let me down.
But I also shop in ounces/grams... and when I saw "Weight : 1.09 kg" in the description, I was stoked! Now, when I see 1,387 kg on my scale, I'm shocked.
That's 27% off... !
I've even looked for objects in every pocket, 5 times over.
So, I'm not so happy anymore. And I will contact Osprey for this. But I'm still convinced it will prove it's value on the next trip.

Well-thought, great size for a sole-bag-flight, comfortable to carry! It may not fit all airlines' cabin restrictions, but certainliy most (or if they don't look too closely). I like the stability of the bag which makes clothes stay mostly in place and therefore good for business trips as well.
I have one suggestion for improvement: An expandable pocket at the bottom. Often, we travel from Germany to warm countries with hand-luggage only and wear sports shoes and a jacket on the flight. Once there (wearing flip-flops and a t-shirt), I'd like to stow them in the backpack, but there is no room. The expandable pocket would put things right.

Just took this for three weeks travel in Asia and it fitted the bill perfectly. The side-guards make it sturdy enough to stand up to the rigours of manhandling for buses and in airports, and the straps, which are easy to tuck away out of sight, are also comfortable enough to make it a comfortable backpack. And you don't have to fill it, as the straps tie it down to a good compact shape. Would definitely recommend to anyone off for a few weeks of travel. Great colour too (Nitro Green) - makes it easily recognisable.

... if you don't book the cheapest of the cheapest more restricted luggage guidelines like Easyjet or Ryanair and don't make the thing look like a it's way too big on first sight. All other airlines are perfectly fine with it, even AA and United. Had no problems with it on Lufthansa and BA/DBA recently.

(4 stars because it could be a bit more comfortable and that size of bag with wheels would be amazing.)

I compared many different backpacks before I bought this one. What made me get this one in the end were the following factors:
1. Weight - just over 1 kilo is great if you want to travel carry-on only and need to be economical not just about what you take but also what you carry it in.
2. Stowable harness - important if bag is to heavy after all and needs to be checked in at the airport.
3. Lockable zippers - I can lock all zippers with just one small padlock.
4. Hip belt - many other carry-on backpacks do not have one at all.
5. Laptop/tablet sleeve and front organisational panel - I like the idea of being organized.
6. Top pocket for easy access to toiletries bag.
7. Fairly solid side walls - the backpack does not collapse in on itself when packing.
8. Compresses really well.

I have used this backpack as my sole bag on several trips now (three weeks in Southeast Asia, two weeks in Italy, several other short trips in Europe) and I'm still really happy with it. There is only one thing I would change about it: the hipbelt. It's too small and doesn't really help distribute weight from the shoulders to the hips. If the Porter 46 had the hipbelt of the Farpoint 40 it would be perfect. I thought about getting the Farpoint 40 instead because of the hipbelt issue but overall I like the design of the Porter 46 so much better that I will stick with it for now. Though if Osprey ever updates it with an improved hipbelt I will buy one immediately.

I already knew that Osprey makes great backpacks, so I decided to get this one not only because it's a Osprey, but also because of its features.
I was just a bit afraid that I would not be able to carry it as a carry-on luggage, but I never had any problems with it. Always carry it as a cabin bag.
I bought it for a world trip, and haven't had any issues so far. Actually, I couldn't be happier with a backpack. It fits a lot of stuff! Totally recommend it!
Rohit
This is the best backpack, I have ever used. Being an engineer, I appreciate great technology behind any product & Osprey definitely beats the other company with their innovation behind this master piece.
It was a great time fooling many airlines with their weight & size restriction of cabin luggage with the Porter 46.
I only wished if there was a service centre in India, in case something goes wrong with the product.
Jim
Ignore one of the reviews here it does NOT fit the standard cabin bag llowances. Just look at the dimensions, then check out Easyjet's allowances. Research before you fork out £90 on somthing tha they're trying to make you think is cabin sized...

Say Hi Market
Really good quality and lightweight backpack. Its 46 litter capacity make it one of the bests choices out there for a 2-5 days trip.

It is very hard to find a fully openable backpack with a laptop compartment. Trust me, I have been looking for something like this for a year and a finally found it!

The only downside of the backpack (and Osprey in general) is the design. In terms of use the are one of the bests, but when it comes to aesthetics I can't say the same: To many Osprey logos everywhere. This simple fact makes their products to look cheap and low quality (and they are not).

**NOTE: I was so pleased with Osprey service and quality that I bought another backpack for commute.
Thibault
I bought this backpack, because I needed something that would fit cabin dimensions for most airlines, and it does.
If you pack your backpack properly (hard things at the bottom and middle, and soft things in the end), this backpack can be very efficiently compressed and will more than fit the cabin dimensions.

It's also quite comfortable to carry, so it's pretty easy to walk with it for a while.
