5th generation of Mutant is a reliable, intelligently-featured climbing pack for year-round ascents.

Super light, flexible, strippable and seasonally versatile you can rely on this perennial climbing partner. When making cold-weather ascents, you’ll appreciate the snow-shedding fabric backpanel, side ski carry loops and dual ToolLock™ system which allows quick and secure ice axe attachment.

The main entry to the Mutant 38 is through a floating and removable top lid, which means you can overload your pack like a packhorse or remove the lid totally for greater head clearance and lighter weight. Lesser climbing packs have minimal weather protection and compression when in this mode, but not the Mutant 38. Use the built-in FlapJacket ™ that provides weatherproof closure; it keeps your gear fully compressed. Also included in the top pocket you will find a rapid deploy mesh helmet storage pouch. The reverse-wrap hipbelt with integrated gear loops delivers your choice of comfort, minimalism or gear racking options. Rock Climbing in the summer or ice climbing and ski touring in the winter, Mutant 38 will be your perfect partner in climb.

    Polyvalent, confortable et robuste
    Très satisfait de ce Mutant 38 4ème génération!
    Un grand volume de rangement pour un poids intéressant avec un confort de portage halluciunant.
    Sobrement accessoirisé, le rangement type cheminée ne conviendra pas à ceux qui recherchent des ouvertures et des poches multiples, pour les autres c'est le compromis idéal pour les activités d'alpinisme, ski et même randos estivales.
    Modulable et compressible on peut même l'emmener sur de petites sorties sans souffrir du volume.
    Encore du très bon boulot de la part d'Osprey!

    que du bon
    Ce sac rempli pleinement son rôle, agréable et léger pour cette capacité, il délivre un confort de portage ben propre à la marque;
    Les 28 L annoncés semblent être bien sous-estimés tant il est possible de le remplir et les différents accessoires (porte casque, corde, etc...) bien pratique;
    les mateiraux sont au top comme toujours dans la marque (j'ai un "Raptor 10) depuis des années qui semble increvable malgré les milliers de m de deniv en trail, rien ne bouge et pourtant je ne le ménage pas, été comme hiver, jour et nuit, bref, une marque à la hauteur de sa réputation

    Awesome! Does It all
    I had the old version of the Mutant 38 and upgraded to this because I wanted more features - it doesn't dissapoint. I use this for climbing/scrambling, on the hill when I'm leading groups and for 2-3 night wild camps. It's ajack of all trades, super reliable pack.

    The frame is super sturdy (much better than the old one) and there's nice convinient features such as the removable Lid and the Ski carry. The material is pretty water resistant but spending most my time in the UK I drybag everything inside the pack anyway so this really isn't an issue. A few things on the pack take some time to get your head round (compression staps and rope carry) So if you want a no frills attatched stripped down pack then this isn't probablly for you however I love the versitility of it - I rarely take any other pack out with me now! I've been using it for about 2-3 years now and although there's some abrasion the pack feels bombproof and I expect to be using it for many years to come, I just need to get the Mutant 28 as well now.

    Initially a nice pack but now I've used it a few times I am not so sure
    I got this on the recommendation of my son who has the older type & raves about it.
    The compression straps are far too long & much more than a full pack needs.
    I would not trust the helmet carry to keep my helmet in.
    When I have used it in the rain & water got inside & my kit got damp.
    There were no instructions with the pack or on line

    Le sac à tout faire, solide, léger, modulable
    Volume et masse à vide modulable facilement en fonction de son utilisation de 28L environ à 38L (généreux), plus besoin de 2 sacs, ni de sacoche en plus grâce au rabat amovible facilement et attachable à la ceinture. Tout en étant bien accessoirisé. Capable de supporter des charges lourdes en étant léger à vide et confortable. Une fois chargé correctement il se fait oublier. Etanchéité excellente, même posé dans la neige (petite humidité par contact prolongé mais rien de méchant). Les mousses meshés ne gardent pas la neige et sèchent rapidement, sac parfait en hiver comme en été (c'est ce qui à finalisé mon choix). Système de sangles de compression génial et facile à manipuler (même ganté). Portes piolets pratiques et rapides, même si on ne peut pas les enlever sac sur le dos (amélioration 1). Après quasi 1 an d'utilisation en Alpi, cascade de glace, grimpe, aucun soucis. Ceinture parfaitement compatible avec un baudrier une fois bien réglé sur le dos. Pas de gêne lors du port d'un casque, même chargé à fond et en levant la tête (bravo l'équipe de conception). En vert il est sobre et élégant, rien que du bonheur. Manque une cordelette (Osprey nous laisse le choix) sur le devant pour fixation des crampons (tester et efficace même pour la doudoune "au cas où". Manque à mon sens deux clips sous le rabat principale afin de "ranger" le second rabat lorsqu'il n'est pas utilisé et/ou deux clips sur le devant afin d'en faire une fixation de corde. Il est venu s'ajouter au Talon 44L de Rando, au Raptor 14L pour le vtt et au FlapJack Courier, trois autres sacs vraiment géniaux. Encore un peu de boulot les gars et ce sac sera parfait !

    Brilliant
    I've never wrote a review before but felt I should because this pack was brilliant. The wide opening at the top made it so much easier to pack. Attention to detail in design and workmanship was reassuring and the volume for the weight was excellent. I work as an IFMGA mountain guide and look forward to putting the bag through its paces in Scotland this winter.

    Not Durable
    Bought this pack on a recommendation from a friend who has the old version before a month long trip to the alps for long alpine rock routes. Lasted till the third multi pitch before developing a hole in the bottom. My partner who has had the old version for years got through the whole trip with no noticeable damage. Very disappointing.

    Super comfy
    Needed a new bag due to problems with a Burghaus pack which was killing me out on the hills. This Osprey bag is amazing, I can hardly feel it on my back. The fit is superb and the difference this has made to my walking is like night and day. Lots of nice features on this bag too. Will never buy Burghaus again. Osprey all the way!! I have a Poco child carrier from Osprey and it is also fantastic.

    Love this pack!
    This pack is light and comfortable on the back, even when you carry quite a load. Use this for mostly alpinism and ice climbing. If there is one thing I miss, it would be zipper access to the main room from the side or back. During a climb, theres always something I need in the bottom of the pack, and quicker and better access would make my life much happier.
