Mutant 38

A pack designed for year-round ascents. Super light, flexible, strippable and seasonally versatile you can rely on this perennial climbing partner. In the winter you will welcome the snowshedding backpanel, side ski carry loops and dual ToolLock™ system which allows quick and secure ice axe attachment. In the summer you'll be feeling the heat but enjoying the EVA die-cut ventilated shoulder harness and the ability to strip 380g from the total pack weight by removing any features you won't need. The main entry to the Mutant 38 is through a floating and removable top lid, which means you can overload your pack like a packhorse or remove the lid totally for greater head clearance and lighter weight. Lesser climbing packs have minimal weather protection and compression when in this mode, but not the Mutant 38. Utilise the built-in FlapJacket™ that not only provides a weatherproof closure; it keeps your gear fully compressed. Also integrated into the top pocket you will find a rapid deploy mesh helmet storage pouch. The reverse-wrap Splitter™ hipbelt delivers your choice of comfort, minimalism or gear racking options. Rock climbing in the summer or ice climbing and ski touring in the winter, your Mutant will never be off your back.

I've never wrote a review before but felt I should because this pack was brilliant. The wide opening at the top made it so much easier to pack. Attention to detail in design and workmanship was reassuring and the volume for the weight was excellent. I work as an IFMGA mountain guide and look forward to putting the bag through its paces in Scotland this winter.

Bought this pack on a recommendation from a friend who has the old version before a month long trip to the alps for long alpine rock routes. Lasted till the third multi pitch before developing a hole in the bottom. My partner who has had the old version for years got through the whole trip with no noticeable damage. Very disappointing.

Needed a new bag due to problems with a Burghaus pack which was killing me out on the hills. This Osprey bag is amazing, I can hardly feel it on my back. The fit is superb and the difference this has made to my walking is like night and day. Lots of nice features on this bag too. Will never buy Burghaus again. Osprey all the way!! I have a Poco child carrier from Osprey and it is also fantastic.

This pack is light and comfortable on the back, even when you carry quite a load. Use this for mostly alpinism and ice climbing. If there is one thing I miss, it would be zipper access to the main room from the side or back. During a climb, theres always something I need in the bottom of the pack, and quicker and better access would make my life much happier.
Olly
Wore this backpack for a two day mountain marathon. Durable, light weight and comfortable to run with. Couldn't fault it.
Alf
I bought this bag because I needed something, for everyday use in the forest and a general bag.

It easily carries my axe, equipment and lunch, water, etc. plus I can squeeze a sleeping bag, pad and helmets if I need to. It's comfy even when fully loaded and I'll walk for miles and barely notice its even there.

Its very versatile with tons of fixing straps, loops and attachment points. For example the tie downs and solid loops on the back will carry an axe or almost any tool,it has carabiner attachments all along the hip strap, and the floating head let's you carry tons.

The bag is of course incredibly well made, and tough. Recommend it to anyone, climber or not.
