Kestrel 48

The Kestrel 48 has been developed to cope with any-trail, any-season. In wet weather and heavy downpours the built in rain cover provides protection. During hotter conditions the adjustable AirScape™ backpanel keeps you well ventilated whilst offering the load support you require. The spacer mesh harness and hipbelt ensure a supportive and comfortable load carrying solution. Whilst the adjustable torso length means the backpack can be altered to fit you perfectly. For overnight trips attach larger items such as a sleeping pad on the lower external straps and put your sleeping bag in the base compartment with internal zip divider. Keep the rest of your gear neatly organised with the hipbelt and lid zipped pockets and access the main compartment easily with the single side vertical zippered access point. Need your hands free for a short scramble? Our unique Stow-on-the-Go™ system means no more 'on and off' to store your trekking poles, just simply pass the poles through the two elasticated loops for an easy hands-free solution. The single ice axe loop may prove useful in winter conditions and wet jackets can be stowed away from the rest of your gear via the front stretch pocket. The dual side compression straps keep your load tight and under control. Our Kestrel pack is also compatible with both Hydraulics™ and Hydraulics™ LT Reservoirs so you can keep hydrated when hiking the trails. Once you're all packed then pull in the reverse StraightJacket™ compression straps to tightly secure your gear and get ready to go.

(This review was left for a previous version of this product)

Lo zaino ha um ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo e ha mostrato un'ottima praticità nella più svariate occasioni. (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

No breaking in required, 35lb load in a 10 mile military endurance race, very comfortable indeed. GR 20 in Corsica a week later, took a lot of punishment whilst scrambling again hugs the body like a glove, everything about this pack feels of durable quality, even the zips sound sexy, bottom compartment very handy, a well thought out and structured backpack, loved the pole carriers, nice touch, side mesh pockets have worn very quickly but as I said the pack took some punishment. Will be staying with Osprey for the rest of my life. (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

A great pack for hiking. I use it for weekend wild camping as well as day hikes. Very comfortable. Handy zip pouches on the hip belt. Wide waist belt and chest strap ensure a stable load carry in all conditions. Stow on the go poles is great I just wish they were on both sides of the pack. I have used this backpack for almost a year in all conditions as part of a search and rescue team. It is a solid investment and does everything the product description says. The adjustable fit is perfect and the design allows for easy access to any part of your kit quickly. After 11 months of regular use the backpack still looks and feels new. The rain cover will come off in really strong wind so I have adapted it by adding a clip at the top. I ordered directly from Osprey and the service was faultless. I've had my Kestrel 48 for about a year. I've used it for longer treks through the Alps and shorter day hikes. The many seperate pockets and stowing options make it very veratile and practical.
The main reason for choosing this pack over others was the shape of the support, it really hugs my back snuggly making it feel almost like a part of my body instead of a weight somewhere behind me. But, in this lies also it's only drawback for me. The description states: "... the adjustable AirScape™ back panel keeps you well ventilated..." For me this is simply not enough to keep my back dry at all. I'm considering trying an Atmos or Exos this summer. I wish there was a Kestrel with the Exos's breathability.

Havind said that, I love my pack, would choose an Osprey again any day. (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

I used this pack for the first time on the South Downs Way and it worked well and has a number of pockets which were useful. So why have I given the pack a low rating well the side pockets cannot be protected by the included rain guard so they they actually filled up with rain water. The sternum strap which is adjustable would not stay were it was set and kept riding up under my chin. Also the pack has an adjustable back section but in my opinion this affects the section of the pack allocated to hold your hydration system so if your pack is full you cannot easily fit the osprey hydration pack. The quality of the materials and the features are remarkable. This backpack is also really versatile. As the back system does not represent a big part of the overall volume, you can reduce the size of the backpack a lot by using the compression straps, if you want to go small and lightweight. I used it as a carry on pack with many low cost European airlines and I didn't have any problems. But you still have plenty of room if you don't mind about the size and you want to carry as much as you can.
If you load it too much, I loaded up to 13kg. Is not as comfortable as other backpacks with more advance back system when you go for long walks/hike.But I guess that's not the aim of this pack. (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

Been testing my Kestrel 48 on many different hikes. I'm living in northern Norway where both weather and terrain can be demanding, so I used a good deal of time to decide what backpack I wanted. The choice landed on the Kestrel, and it has never let me down on a trip yet.

The backpack gives a good comfort when walking, and it feels balanced. I like the detail with two pockets in the top lid (on the outside), since I usually end up having a mess in my other packs where it's only one. I haven't experienced any problems regarding heavy packing, although I see the possibility. I've carried my sleeping bag, tent and other heavy equipment but cannot say it has been a problem. The rain cover is big enough, but it failed me once during heavy rain (rain+strong wind), but the internal of the pack was dry although the outside was soaked. There's one thing I would like to change on this pack, and that's the color of the rain cover. It should be in at bright color so it is easy to see, but it is red so it's not so hard either. The materials are good and strong. I've used it at bit rough some times, but the only scratch I've got on it was a broken clip to one of the tightening straps.

So to summarize: Nice backpack who works winter and summer. You can easily carry your "must have" gear ++ in this pack, but if you need a lot more I suggest a bigger pack. I have used it on mountains and highland, and the rain cover can handle it. I've used it rough, and the materials are dealing with it. So all in all it is a nice pack!
Will definitely consider Osprey next time I need a new backpack. (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

Which is really all you can ask for from a rucksack. The hip loading works really well and the shoulder straps fit snugly, contoured in towards your sternum which I think helps avoid slipping/chaffing I have tolerated with other packs for too many years.

I really over-loaded this with bottles of water training for a summer hike in the Grand Canyon, and it coped very well - I could barely life it, but one on my back was just fine.

The snug back does generate/hold some sweat, but doesn't feel clammy I've not found a rucksack that sits away from the back which is actually comfortable, so this is a better compromise. for me anyway.

The pole holders are remarkably effective and don't get in the way.

Loaded normally, I am barely aware of it. The whole Grand Canyon trip, I never even gave my rucksack a 2nd thought - it just did it's job. (This review was left for a previous version of this product)
