Kestrel 38

The Kestrel 38 has been developed to cope with any-trail, any-season. In wet weather and heavy downpours the built in rain cover provides protection. During hotter conditions the adjustable AirScape™ backpanel keeps you well ventilated whilst offering the load support you require. The spacer mesh harness and hipbelt ensure a supportive and comfortable load carrying solution. Whilst the adjustable torso length means the backpack can be altered to fit you perfectly. For overnight trips attach larger items such as a sleeping pad on the lower external straps and put your sleeping bag in the base compartment with internal zip divider. Keep the rest of your gear neatly organised with the hipbelt and lid zipped pockets. Need your hands free for a short scramble? Our unique Stow-on-the-Go™ system means no more 'on and off' to store your trekking poles, just simply pass the poles through the two elasticated loops for an easy hands-free solution. The single ice axe loop may prove useful in winter conditions and wet jackets can be stowed away from the rest of your gear via the front stretch pocket. The dual side compression straps keep your load tight and under control. Our Kestrel pack is also compatible with both Hydraulics™ and Hydraulics™ LT Reservoirs so you can keep hydrated when hiking the trails. Once you're all packed then pull in the reverse StraightJacket™ compression straps to tightly secure your gear and get ready to go.

I bought a Kestrel 38 when it first hit the market. As a wilderness guide, my remote wilderness guiding pack is the Xena 85, but when I'm on shorter treks, going solo, or within reach of civilisation, the Kestrel is the perfect pack. It has been to every continent, over all types of terrain, and in all weather. It's tough. It has been doused in diesel, it has survived being submerged in rapids and waterfalls, has gone ice climbing and alpine trekking, and has been lovingly dragged through deserts. This pack has survived years of use and abuse by both myself and every person I have loaned it to. And no matter whose back it is on - male or female, it comes back with compliments. I can fit enough gear in it to overnight, plenty of layers, and my extensive guide's first aid kit. No matter how full I pack it, or how heavy the load is, it always sits comfortably on my back - a really pleasant surprise as I have always used packs with more padded hip belts. If you buy only one day/overnighting pack for your walking trips (or waterfall accidents), this is the one to get. If only I could stop lusting after the Kyte, though....

Bought for a trip to Switzerland, used extensively in some tough terrain, performed well. Other reviews note issues with the walking pole loops, I also found this a problem but not enough to worry about. I'd ceertainly buy one of these packs again

Having had several bags from different manufactures, this is by far and away the best all round bag I've had.

It's been used for, charity treks, days out with the family, weekends away, days at the crag, over nighters, even for work on occasion and handled everything I've thrown at it without an issue.
Stuart
Great for week long trips to warmer climates and haven't had any issues using as carry on luggage yet!

Best day/overnight pack I've ever owned - highly recommended!!! (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

Recomendable 100% (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

Pretty much everything you could want in a winter walking rucksack in the Scottish highlands. I love it's functionality and the way in which you can access tools and compartments much more easily than my old (20 years old) rucksack.
A couple of issues did occur though. The loops for the walking poles come first. You can't access them on the move like the vid shows when you stuff anything in the elastic pocket. It bulges out and blocks the lower strap. The second is the pockets in the waist belt. They are a brilliant concept, but you can't open them all the way when wearing the rucksack. I still managed to get my compact camera in while walking, but it is a bit of a struggle. Sort out those two issues, and this for this pack you would have little to complain about.
As it is, I still love it! (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

(This review was left for a previous version of this product)

I have been on the road for a total of two months now and i m in love with the bag. Right size for long term travel, carry on size and comfortable for hiking. I love all the extra pockets on the front, inside and belt. It might be a bit early but it feels quite robust. Only the lace inside is getting bit worn but definitely a quality product with a decent price. (This review was left for a previous version of this product)

After walking the Camino Frances with my Deuter ACT Lite 50 + 10, I decided to try out a smaller pack due to the fact that I always had excess room (and weight) in the Deuter. The smaller variant from Deuter (40 + 10) just didn't feel right and was only marginally lighter than the 50. The Kestrel is over 300g (w. rain c.) lighter which is noticeable. Every gram counts. The Kestrel doesn't come across as being as robust as the Deuter, but it sits very well and is very comfortable, due to the fact that the back length is adjustable. The hip belt, although constructed of less material and less padding, carries the weight extremely well and the bonus of an extra hip belt pocket was appreciated.
Have had my kestrel 38 m/l for a year now and have used it about 20 times many overnight trips and it has performed faultlessly. Plenty of pockets lots of storage plus all day comfort. Awesome (This review was left for a previous version of this product)
