Osprey needs to listen
I don't tend to write reviews but after having read the responses from Osprey for the reviews of Wojtek and steelkilt I decided that I should add my review to defend them. I have the exact same experience with the side mesh pockets. They are essentially too wide and too short to hold anything with any sense of security and I have dropped my water bottle quite a few times. Also the strap is as Steelkilt noted is way to low to make any difference in securing the water bottle. If anything, it makes things worse. I can understand that Osprey made a design error. What I do not understand, and in fact I find odd and insulting to customers, is the fact that Osprey has replied to both of the previous reviews not only with denial, but also with trying to make out that both Wojtek and steelkilt are not "doing it right". This attitude is at the very least patronising.

Dear Osprey, hikelite is the best, most comfortable and versatile backpack I ever had. But the side mesh pockets are useless and this needs to be recognised.
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi Sps,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on the Hikelite 26.

We are sorry to hear you have experienced issues holding your bottle in the stretch mesh pockets on your pack. Although our packs have been tested with 1L wide mouth water bottles, this issue has been raised with our EU Product Line Manager, who works directly with our Design Team, and will be taken into account for any future models of the Hikelite.

Osprey backpack
Found this extremely good size for hiking, took all I needed. Mesh pockets were fine, and you can pull the belt over a water bottle to hold securely. It held my 2 litre water bag in the back. Only reason doesn't get 5 stars is that I need pockets inside , especially when using to get through airports etc. Maybe its a woman thing but why no pockets except one not very big or secure one on outside plus sweatshirt type pull through? Straps very comfortable.
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on the Hikelite 26.

It is great to hear you have been pleased with your pack for hiking, however, we will ensure your feedback on additional internal pockets is passed to our Design Team for reflection.

Extremely poor mesh side pockets
Since I'm going to be highly critical of this pack, let me say first off that I think Osprey generally make superb packs, some of the best around: certainly the lightest and most comfortable and most easily and extensively adjustable. The Talon 33 is the best pack I've ever owned in this regard. I absolutely love it. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Hikelite 26. I appreciate that the Hikelite 26 is not as high spec a pack as the Talon 33 and is not as expensive. Fair enough. But, it's still pretty expensive, expensive enough that it's chief shortcoming simply shouldn't exist at this price. This bad design fault, as the other reviewer Wojtek quite rightly points out, is the appallingly poor mesh side pockets. The problem is that any water bottle and similarly shaped item simply falls out. The pockets can not be trusted; there is a real danger of losing stuff. The pockets are too shallow and too wide. At first sight, it looks like the compression strap that you can tighten around the pockets is meant to compensate for the loose flabbiness of the pockets. But it doesn't work at all: you tighten it and the water bottle still wriggles loose and falls out; in fact, the compression strap just makes it worse because its placed too low down on the pocket so that tightening it serves merely to force or pop the bottle out of the pocket. I don't know what Osprey Customer Service in taking about in reply to Wojtek. The compression straps are not only useless but makes matters worse. I'm at a total loss as to know what happened in the R&D dept at Osprey on this: it's very hard to believe that the prototype was tested, as Osprey Customer Service claims in response to Wojtek. A two minute test of these pockets would have instantly revealed that bottles just fall out of them. The other features of the pack are excellent: the lightness and comfort and the rain shield. Nevertheless, the side pockets just ruin this pack for me. I wish so much that I had noticed them, that I had tried the pockets first, before buying this pack. If I had known how bad the side pockets were I would not have bought this pack, even given it's other more characteristic Osprey excellences. So I'm a disappointed Osprey fan.
Osprey Customer Service,

Hello,

We are sorry to hear that you are having such issues with the Hikelite. The Hikelite 26 is tested with a standard 1L wide mouth water bottle and has no issues in holding the bottle in place. The only bit of advice that I can offer to help with this is to loosen the compression strap as much as possible before inserting the water bottle so that you can make sure that the bottle is in place before securing it with the compression straps.

I hope that this helps but if there is anything else, please feel free to email care@ospreyeurope.com and we will be more than happy to answer any other questions that you have.

light, reliable, very comfortable and easy to wash
I took the HikeLight 26 for a 320 km/10 day hike in the Alps and northern Italy this summer. Depending on weather conditions and food/water planning I carried from 2.5 kg (base weight) up to 8.5 kg. It turned out to be reliable under each and every condition. The comfort of the shoulder straps is outstanding with any load. After a couple of days in extreme heat you want to wash straps and back mash. I was surprised how easy and effective the material can be washed and how fast it dryes. Due to high comfort of shoulder straps I use 3 different light Osprey backpacks in different sizes depending on the needs of my project. The HL 26 is ideal for long distance ultralight hiking without overnight gear.

What is wrong with the mesh side pockets ???
I love this pack and I use it everyday but there is a huge issue. The mesh side pockets.... The Osprey Customer Service wrote below that " The mesh pockets have been designed to hold a standard wide mouth water bottle up to 1 L ". The problem is that I use wide mouth 1L Nalgene bottle and it slips out from the mesh pockets too !!!! It slips out when I bend over a bit to take something from the trunk of my car or just to correct my shoe. When I walk I`m very scared that I will loose my water bottle. It looks like the side straps are too low. I don`t understand what was on the Osprey`s designers minds that it is fixed or maybe it is fixed but I do something wrong with it ?
I`m giving 5 stars because I love this pack and I hope that I do something wrong with it but I still didn`t find a solution for this :(
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi Wojtek,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on the Hikelite 26.

It is great to hear that you have been using your Hikelite everyday, and on the whole you have been pleased with your pack. However, we are sorry to learn that you have experienced issues with your water bottle in the side stretch mesh pockets. The Hikelite 26 has been tested with a standard 1L wide mouth bottle, this should fit comfortably in the pocket and remain there, as along as the pack is not under filled and the compression straps are fully utilised. Please feel free to contact us, if this issue persists, as we would be more than happy to assist further.

Very versatile bag
This backpack is very versatile and has many uses. It is incredibly comfortable and stays off the back allowing a breeze through.

Excellent pack
I got this pack mostly for short day hike and I found it very comfortable and convenient. Lot of pockets to carry everything I need and I feel it good on my back and shoulders. I like the rain cover (it's one of the features I was looking for), very useful and smart.
The only little negative I found is that it's difficult to make it stay straight when on ground, but other than that it is a great backpack.
Audrey
Side pockets useless
I totally agree with the previous reviewer concerning the disappointing useless side pockets. I find them useless for carrying a water bottle. The bottle just falls out. I do not want to buy the Osprey plastic bladder for use inside the backpack. I don't like them. They leak eventually. And why should I have the extra expenditure when a side pocket should hold a water bottle. It is a basic requirement. I complained to Osprey after using the pack once and finding it not fit for purpose because of this poor design feature but was fobbed off with comments that my contract is with the supplier of the pack, not with Osprey. This may be true but to shirk responsibility for their poor design simply means I'll not be buying Osprey again. poor pack and poor customer service.
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi Audrey,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on the Hikelite 26.

We are sorry to hear that you have been disappointed by the use of the side pockets on your pack. The Hikelite 26 has been designed to comfortably carry up to a 1L standard, wide mouth water bottle. The compression straps on the side of the pack will ensure that the water bottle is tightly placed to prevent it falling out. We apologise if you have not found this to be the case with your pack, and we will ensure your feedback is passed on to our Design Team for reflection.

For purchases of Osprey packs through one of our retailers, Osprey Europe are unable to directly refund or exchange the pack, this is due to the contract of purchase being between yourself and the retailer you purchased your pack from. In these instances, the retailers refund and exchange policy is followed, and the final decision is at their discretion. However, if there has been a manufacturing fault with your pack, our Guarantee Team will be more than happy to assist.

Really, REALLY good !
I bought the Hikelite 26 to do a hill walk (Hart Fell near Moffat in Scotland) that I’ve wanted to do for years. My old ruck sack is heavy and always felt bulky. So, I wanted to be able to carry what I needed easily (I’m 61 and not a regular hill walker). 29.06.18 was hot (Met Office says 25.8 by 15.00) but the mesh back worked fantastically well. My back stayed cool and dry all day (I was out for over 13 hours). I carried 6L of fluids without finding it uncomfortable. Nothing about the Hikelite 26 was uncomfortable. My walking poles stayed in place. Plus ... I love the colour (I bought the green). Really good. Well worth the money. A pleasure.

Amazing pack
Not only was it delivered within a day, it is a really great pack. Extremely lightweight. It's very adjustable so that the content is always secure. The mesh back panel is perfect for warm weather. I had no issue securing 0.5L bottles in the side pockets using the straps. I will be using this pack a lot.
Adam
Great pack BUT.....
Great pack. Super comfortable and exactly what you need for one day hike or urban commuting but... Dear Osprey.... I am a big fan of your products and I consider you one of the best pack producers in the world. This is why I am so dissapointed with the side bottle pockets!!! Shame on you. You can use them for everything but carrying a bottle. They are too big and bottle just slips out. The only way it works is if the pack is fully loaded and you tighten the compression straps really well. In case when the pack is half full, forget you’ll safely carry your bottle in it. This is a basic function and I do not see why Osprey would fail doing it right. 10$ packs from the supermaket have these pockets done better. The only logical reason in my opinion is to force your customers to buy and use your camel back water carriers. Well... I don’t like them so with this pack I need to carry my bottle in the main compartment which is very inconvinient.
