Stratos 34

The wind on your back. Stratos 34 brings true innovation and quality to the ventilated pack world.

Inspired by Osprey's AntiGravity™ technology, Stratos 34 provides a fully adjustable AirSpeed™ ventilated back system which combines the single piece construction of the backpanel and hipbelt with highly breathable suspended mesh. This allows for increased comfort in warm weather, even with a heavy load.

The classic styling and clean design, alongside an impressively comfortable carry makes the Stratos 34 a firm favourite for walkers and hikers who are looking for a ventilated daypack with enough capacity for lightweight camping equipment and overnight gear, or plenty of extra layers and equipment for when the weather is changeable. The detachable raincover stored in the bottom pocket increases weather resistance and tough nylon fabrics ensure durability. Stratos 34 features a large panel opening, an easy access pocket on the top and a large, vertically zipped expansion pocket on the front which is perfect for securely storing a jacket or spare layer for easy access. Stratos 34 is the perfect pack for long days on winding trails or lightweight overnight trips in warm weather.

Stratos 34 is compatible with all Hydraulics™ and Hydraulics LT™ reservoirs.

Is the Stratos 34 great? It depends....
We purchased this backpack after hours of testing in a local outdoor outfitter with lots of help from the Shops staff. We asked for a day-trip backback and I ended up with the Stratos 34. For me it's exactly between two worlds because it's really on the low side when it comes to capacity. For a day-tour I allways like to have some extra clothing-layers that I can store in my backpack and when it's colder it is very very tight insight the backback: 2x 1L bottles of water, 1x rain jacket, 1x wind-jacket, 1x merino-hoody (or sometimes a Isolation-jacket in a compression-bag), 1x rain-trousers (all packed in zip-packs) 1x small lunch-box, some energy bars and some Little peaces in the upper case of the backpack. And with all this stuff there is no space left in the big case - and even worse: when the main case is completely full: you will have a hard time to put a lot of things in the front case because this case fills towards the inside of the backpack. It's a great backpack with a lot of cases and nice options, but it could be a bit more bigger inside. My Stratos 34 is the L version with a long back-part and it's not possible to carry it as hand-luggage on flights.

So far so good
Only had the bag for 6 weeks and not used enough to provide a full review but so far the most comfortable bag that I have ever bought. Easy access to lots of pockets so great for the way I use it.

Well made rucksack
Purchased the Stratos 34 after looking at the specifications and reviews. The pack looks well made and sturdy. Although not used it on any long hikes yet. Fully loaded (about 10 kg) the rucksack was very comfortable. The rucksack was delivered quickly and in good condition. Not sure if l will get in on an airplane as hand luggage due to decreasing size restrictions.
Two little gripes, although rectified.
Loose strap ends, annoying in windy weather. Sorted with Velcro one wrap ties.
Hiking pole fastening. I like many hikers carry a pole just in case of difficult terrain. The bag has a ‘stow on the go option’ but that is not suitable if you just want to carry the walking pole all day.
The customer service stated to use the ‘stow on the go’. The bag is stated to be for hikers, not sure what most hikers want an ice axe for, the loop could be used for poles.
Purchased the rucksack at the wrong time, as a short time after purchasing, a free Hydraulics reservoir on offer. Never mind, looking forward to trying the Stratos out on a long hike.

Careful with sizes
Careful with sizes (S / M vs M / L), I advise you to go to a store and try them to see the one that suits you, measure is treacherous. I'm in between and I opted for M / L, which was a mistake in hindsight. I thought that once I have my sweater and my jacket, I'd gain a size. The suspenders can be adjusted too. Unfortunately for me, the structure itself passes slightly above my head so it is difficult to adjust the weight with the load adjusters (they lift the straps too much). As the structure is curved, the weight is naturally further from the back which worsens the problem so that's why its crucial to get it right.

If you do get the size right it should be a great backpack though and the ventilation does work!

This is my second Osprey rucksack, build quality is second to none.
This being my second Osprey bag the quality and attention to detail are amazing. The Stratos 34 is great for my day hikes and for short overnight stays. More than enough storage for my needs and built in rain cover is a great addition. 5 star backpack with 5 star service as always.

Good, except with salt water
Hi,
I like this little backpack. I have it now a few years, and it is still OK. I like especially the frame that let the air go through. There is however one big minus. When the zippers comes in contact with salt water, you have to rinse it very good, else the salt is getting in the zippers, and it will become almost impossible to open / close the zipper.
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi Johan,

We're pleased to hear that you are overall happy with your Stratos 34 and how it has performed over the years.

Stratos 34
I bought this for my husband after I purchased the Sirrus for myself.
He finds it very comfortable and loves the various straps which makes it easy to adjust. to get the balance correct.
No complaints from him. He would recommend it.

Cracking little bag
Love this bag already. Have used it several times with various loads in it and it sits so comfortably whatever the weight inside. The stow and go trekking pole points are great. They are simple to use and get the poles out of the way and do not interfer with normal arm movement. It is all very well thought out and I would recomend to any one without hesitation.

Removable waistpockets and strap, please
I would like for the "waistpockets" to be removable. I have no use for those, nor the strap going around the waist. From my older Stratos 18 I've cut out these and find it perfect now. But this newer Stratos 34 build does not allow me to use scissors :/.

Everything else is great.
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi Jardaani,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on the Stratos 34.

It is great to hear overall, you have been pleased with your pack. However, we are sorry to learn that you have found the hipbelt pockets redundant; we will ensure your feedback on making these removable is passed to our Design Team for reflection.

Good overall
I'm pleased with the backpack so far. Only used it twice at this point. It's my second Osprey. The first one for the bike came in with the water bladder. I'd love if that was the case with this backpack too. I'll be buying it anyways, it's just a shame it's not part of the kit already.
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi Frank,

Thank you taking the time to write a review on the Stratos 34.

It is great to hear that you have been pleased with your Stratos. All of our Hiking packs are compatible with our Hydraulic Reservoirs, however, they do not come with one as this allows each customer to choose the volume that is most suitable for their needs and activities.

Great backpack, no complaints at all
I used the pack for shorter hikes as well as for a two-week trip to Spain, where we were on the road for most of the time. It's very comfortable, the size is great, the compartments are smartly distributed. It's a very balanced pack, for one with back issues I think it has a really good support system. 100% recommended!
Vlad
Great pack with few surprising shortcings.
Great pack that I use for everyday commute to work on a bike. I had Atmos 35 that I had to replace as the frame was pushing against the back of the head (weird design) The frame problem is gone here but I do miss the side access to the side pockets and removable chest strap and for some weird reason one being 35L and this one 34L the difference in actual amount of stuff you can cram into it is around 5l not 1 Otherwise great pack.

Perfect Back Pack for All Day Trekking
After much research and using the Pack sizing App, I opted for the longer version of this pack. It's first trip was on a trek to Everest Base Camp and it performed faultlessly. The walking poles stowage system is excellent and was the envy of all the other members of the group. It is big enough to be able to carry all the paraphernalia needed for a trek in a hostile environment with extremes of weather. The rain cover worked perfectly in both rain and heavy snow keeping the contents completely dry (and it's easy to fit) and the back venting system kept me cool in temps of up o 28 degrees. It looks great too!

Good pack, but several points could be improved
After owning this pack for one year, and using it for many one-day hikes, here is my feedback:
Pros:
- included raincover
- very large hip belt pockets (my iPhone fits easily)
- very comfortable on the hips (width OK)
- body side of the hipbelt is black, hence doesn't show the dirt
- almost stands up without falling down, when put down on a flat ground (but could stand up better, this is annoying and is worth being improved).

Cons:
- The largest of the two top pockets is in fact located in the main compartment, making it difficult to use when the pack is filled to the gills. Moreover, it partly blocks access to the hydration pouch pocket.
- The smallest of the two top pockets is still usable even when the pack is full, but it is tiny.
- Zippered lower compartment with internal divider is not really necessary on such a small pack. I would have much more appreciated a front mesh pocket.
- No front mesh pocket.
- Lower and upper ice axe (and trekking poles) attachment loops too close apart (33cm): a long ice axe, or trekking poles tend to go sideways (they don't stay vertical). The upper attachment loop should be further up. The Stow-on-the-go poles attachment is an excellent feature, which caused me to choose both my Osprey packs, and buy one as a gift for a friend. But when on travel (when you need to often put the pack on and off), it is not ideal, I'd rather have my poles attached to the rear of the pack.
- Too much distance between the trampoline suspended mesh backsystem, and the main compartment: my fist fits in between! The frame is too curved, which makes the pack difficult to fill, and takes the load further away from the hiker. A less curved frame, hence a smaller distance between the mesh trampoline and the pack, would still allow a good ventilation while minimizing the above drawbacks. On my Atmos 50, the trampoline is closer to the back, which is better.
