Mutant 38

Ce sac rempli pleinement son rôle, agréable et léger pour cette capacité, il délivre un confort de portage ben propre à la marque;
Les 28 L annoncés semblent être bien sous-estimés tant il est possible de le remplir et les différents accessoires (porte casque, corde, etc...) bien pratique;

Awesome! Does It all
I had the old version of the Mutant 38 and upgraded to this because I wanted more features - it doesn't dissapoint. I use this for climbing/scrambling, on the hill when I'm leading groups and for 2-3 night wild camps. It's ajack of all trades, super reliable pack.

The frame is super sturdy (much better than the old one) and there's nice convinient features such as the removable Lid and the Ski carry. The material is pretty water resistant but spending most my time in the UK I drybag everything inside the pack anyway so this really isn't an issue. A few things on the pack take some time to get your head round (compression staps and rope carry) So if you want a no frills attatched stripped down pack then this isn't probablly for you however I love the versitility of it - I rarely take any other pack out with me now! I've been using it for about 2-3 years now and although there's some abrasion the pack feels bombproof and I expect to be using it for many years to come, I just need to get the Mutant 28 as well now.

Initially a nice pack but now I've used it a few times I am not so sure
I got this on the recommendation of my son who has the older type & raves about it.
The compression straps are far too long & much more than a full pack needs.
I would not trust the helmet carry to keep my helmet in.
When I have used it in the rain & water got inside & my kit got damp.
There were no instructions with the pack or on line
Osprey Customer Service,

Hi Bob,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review on the Mutant 38.

The reason the compression straps have the additional length to them is so the pack will enable you to carry large kit such as Fat Powder Skis, probes, walking poles, tents or sleeping pads if you wanted to. The Helmet Carry is a totally trustworthy feature and will carry any climbing helmet comfortably if used correctly. As long as the raincover was correctly secured onto your pack using the small loop at the bottom and tightening the drawstring mechanism, there should have been no issues with water getting into your pack.

Please see our Owner's Manual here for any instructions needed for the Mutant 38.

Regards,

Osprey Customer Service

Brilliant
I've never wrote a review before but felt I should because this pack was brilliant. The wide opening at the top made it so much easier to pack. Attention to detail in design and workmanship was reassuring and the volume for the weight was excellent. I work as an IFMGA mountain guide and look forward to putting the bag through its paces in Scotland this winter.

Not Durable
Bought this pack on a recommendation from a friend who has the old version before a month long trip to the alps for long alpine rock routes. Lasted till the third multi pitch before developing a hole in the bottom. My partner who has had the old version for years got through the whole trip with no noticeable damage. Very disappointing.

Super comfy
Needed a new bag due to problems with a Burghaus pack which was killing me out on the hills. This Osprey bag is amazing, I can hardly feel it on my back. The fit is superb and the difference this has made to my walking is like night and day. Lots of nice features on this bag too. Will never buy Burghaus again. Osprey all the way!! I have a Poco child carrier from Osprey and it is also fantastic.

Love this pack!
This pack is light and comfortable on the back, even when you carry quite a load. Use this for mostly alpinism and ice climbing. If there is one thing I miss, it would be zipper access to the main room from the side or back. During a climb, theres always something I need in the bottom of the pack, and quicker and better access would make my life much happier.
Olly
Faultless
Wore this backpack for a two day mountain marathon. Durable, light weight and comfortable to run with. Couldn't fault it.

brilliant all round bag
I bought this bag because I needed something, for everyday use in the forest and a general bag.

It easily carries my axe, equipment and lunch, water, etc. plus I can squeeze a sleeping bag, pad and helmets if I need to. It's comfy even when fully loaded and I'll walk for miles and barely notice its even there.

Its very versatile with tons of fixing straps, loops and attachment points. For example the tie downs and solid loops on the back will carry an axe or almost any tool,it has carabiner attachments all along the hip strap, and the floating head let's you carry tons.

The bag is of course incredibly well made, and tough. Recommend it to anyone, climber or not.
