Perfect for long term, hostel based, carry-on-only backpacking (as well as weekends away and business trips!)
After celebrating my retirement by carrying a big bag on two sixth-month backpacking trips in Asia, I decided to lighten up and use a Farpoint 40 for my next adventure: a year touring around South America. This meant packing ruthlessly, with only the essentials for activities ranging from sleeping in sub-zero temperatures in the high Andes to lounging on hot beaches in the tropics. But it also meant I could fly carry-on-only (with cost savings that more than paid for the backpack) and live a more simple life on the road. Things about the pack that I appreciated while away: the clamshell design, the zip-away carrying straps, the dirty-clothes compartment, the internal and external compression straps and the comfortable waist strap that took weight off my shoulders and transferred it to my pelvis so I could walk further. I also liked that I could use a single small padlock to secure both main compartments and, with the addition of a cable, lock the pack to a bed in any hostel that didn’t provide lockers.
I’m now back home in London and the pack is intact and fully functioning. The only wear is to its top corners, where the tightly stretched fabric is scuffed, probably from being pushed in and pulled out of gritty luggage compartments in long-distance buses. The only feature I didn’t use was the padded laptop compartment. I expect to use the pack many more times and I would recommend it to anyone planning a long, lightweight, no-camping trip. And having tested it long-term on the road, I'm sure it's fine for the weekends away and business trips that Osprey have in mind.

Perfect for long term, hostel based, carry-on-only backpacking
After a couple of six-month Asian trips carrying a bigger backpack, I bought a Farpoint 40 for my next adventure: a year-long tour of South America. Using this and a 15 litre daypack I managed get all my possessions into a carry-on compatible format (the savings in air fare more than paid for the bags!). Before setting out, though, I had to make some difficult decisions - my trip would span sub-zero nights in the high Andes and sweltering days on tropical beaches, so I had pack a broad range of essential items and leave out all the non-essential. Long story short, I'm now back home in London and the Farpoint has survived its travels without any problem. While away I made good use of the clamshell design, the internal and external compression straps, the flap that zips away the carrying straps, the internal dirty-clothes compartment and the proper waist belt that takes the weight off my shoulders and transfers it to my pelvis so I could walk long distances. I liked that a single small padlock could secure the two main compartments and, using a cable, so l could lock the pack to a bed when my hostel didn't provide lockers.
Since returning I have been on a short trip to San Diego and Mexico, and without hesitation I picked my Farpoint and travelled again only with carry-on. Lucky I did, or I would have missed a connection coming home after one of my independently booked flights was delayed and I needed to make a quick transfer.
The only wear I can see is some scuffing on the 'shoulders' of the bag, where stretched fabric has been abraded, probably when being pushed in and pulled out of gritty luggage compartments in long-distance buses.
I'm expecting to get more use out of this pack in the coming years and I have no hesitation recommending it to other travellers.

Great but weird laptop position
Everything as great as expecteD.
Laptop pocket is a bit weird, on top of the central pocket.
You have a plank-like heavy object on top of your stuff in the main compartment, away from the body. Makes the bag less compact because of the wasted space between your stuff and the laptop, also it gets difficult to close even if the bag is technically not full, because of this rigidity in the upper-layer.

Great bag, few things could be better
Overall great! Comfortable and has loads of room! Two things I would like to see added: 1. A small pocket on shoulder strap. 2. Easier access to water bottle- currently not able to access whilst backpack is on my back.

Great backpack
Farpoint 40 is a solid performer, nothing bad to say about the quality. The design however would have benefited from deeper mesh pockets for water bottles and a few more places to place hooks and whatnot. A good amount of molle webbing on the sides might have added to the value of the pack. I personally would have liked to add some additional space on this backpack when on the road and out of the airplane.

Perfect
Purchased for my sons month long trip to Indonesia, the farpoint 40 was the perfect size for a boy who packed light! You’d probably want the larger version if travelling for longer or wanting to take more than a pair of flip flops as your spare shoes! It opens like a suitcase, so its easy to access clothes without having to pull everything out.
We loved how the harness straps can be zipped away when flying. It was very practical & stylish.
