At Osprey we’re passionate about the outdoors and about the sports and activities we pursue there. In this blog we caught up with Osprey Europe team member, Julia Hamlyn, about her passion for mountain biking. Here’s what she had to say…
What are your key achievements in 2018 so far?
2018 has been very busy, racing in a mix of cross country and gravity enduro races (I was inspired by Osprey athlete Tracy Moseley to try this discipline this year). I’ve managed to earn 5 x wins; 4 x 2nd, plus a 3rd, 4th & 5th. It’s my first year in the ‘veterans’ category (I’m giving my age away there), it’s a great competitive field and nice to see so many other women racing.
What has been your greatest achievement to date?
Being invited to join a team at the end of last year has inspired me to train harder than ever before. That’s resulted in me getting onto the top step of the podium at a National Cross Country Series race in June, and a 2nd place finish at the infamous Ard Rock Enduro in Yorkshire. These are 2 pretty special achievements this year, but in all honesty 2018 has been a surprise whirlwind.
What are your aspirations for the rest of the year and 2019?
The main race season has finished now so I’ll have a little rest and then maintain fitness with more sociable rides & some winter races. Riding & racing bikes is so much fun so I just want more of the same next year (although I have to remind myself of that when the race nerves kick in). I’d like to try some different events as they get you out to new places.
If you had to give one piece of advice to someone getting into mountain biking, what would it be?
Firstly your bike doesn’t have to have all the bells and whistles (although bells are handy). Speak to a local bike shop – they often run group rides which get you out on local trails, plus their knowledge and support is invaluable. You can also find out about local trail centres & races online. Otherwise, grab an OS Map and go explore! Don’t forget to take a drink & some tools and who knows where your bike will take you. You’ll undoubtedly pick up some awesome new friends along the way, I did.
